GBV comes into the spotlight during awareness event
Various stakeholders came together to raise awareness around GBV.
Sebenza Police Station and the You Are Not Alone Women and Family Center began their 16-Days of Activism campaign against the abuse of women and children, on December 2.
The station collaborated with the Sebenza CPF and various security companies for the initiative.
‘Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence and femicide: Leaving no one behind’ is the theme for this year’s campaign.
According to Jabulile Cynthia Maseko, the founder of You Are Not Alone, the event began with a walk from the Sebenza Police Station to Van Reebeck Park.

At the final destination, participants were treated to presentations from the Lopeco Foundation, SAPS, CPF, Mamba Security, You Are Not Alone Women and Family Center, Ironhide Security and Peacekona.

The keynote speaker for the day was a survivor of GBV.
SHRAC11 from Thembisa’s Ward 11 also presented a performance.
“The community was informed about the many stakeholders’ services aimed at preventing abuse of women and children.
“Additionally, we urge people to report GBV and femicide cases to the police station, where they will receive assistance from YANA and SAPS social workers in our victim friendly room, a private and secure space (CFR).

“Our social professionals will provide them with free counselling as well,” said social worker Jabulile Maseko.

Maseko thanked all of the participants for their cooperation.
Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso added that while the government cannot eradicate GBV on its own, this collaboration can aid the community in reducing the scourge of violence.
