They prevailed and took home the coveted trophy and a R220 000 award.

The team’s victory broke a 20-year curse of not winning any trophies in the Phyllis Games.

Coach Vregga was incredibly proud of his players’ accomplishments and their capacity to overcome obstacles.

Consistent dedication and well-considered choices paved the path to success.

“I assembled a team of players, who regularly competed in competitive leagues, including ABC Motsepe League players from different teams. This selection ensured a high level of skill and experience within the squad.”

Motivating the players to break the curse became a driving force throughout the tournament.

“I gave them a challenge, reminding them that Abarondoli FC had competed in the competition for the previous 20 years but had never won a trophy.

“Acknowledging the chance to create history and maybe land contracts with Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams should they win the championship, the players accepted this challenge happily.

“A number of the athletes had suffered the heartbreak of almost missing out on winning in past competitions, including the Powerico Games, Imvuselelo Under 23 Games, and Mosehla Games 2023.

Abarondoli FC developed a strong team spirit, which motivated them to work harder and go above and beyond.

“Even throughout the holidays, the team’s dedication was apparent. Aware of the difficulties in getting all the players together after Christmas, they convened on Boxing Day to establish a unified and purposeful camp.

“While every player gave their all, three individuals stood out for their exceptional performances. Boy Gcibha, wearing the number 2 jersey, demonstrated outstanding skills, as did Jackob Leverson, donning the number 7 jersey, and Themba Ndlovu, who wore the number 12 jersey,” said Vregga.

In terms of the future, Vregga underlined how critical it is to hold onto the majority of the players and rectify any flaws on the team.

“This will help us to keep up our winning ways and build on recent achievements.”
