Rabie Ridge Community Hall and Library reopen after renovations
The R3.3m refurbishment enhances both the functionality and aesthetics of the community hall and library.
The Rabie Ridge community hall and library in Region A, north of Johannesburg, has been transformed following renovations and refurbishments spearheaded by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).
The official reopening was on February 12. It was led by the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) MMC for Community Development Lubabalo Magwentshu, alongside the MMC for Development Planning Eunice Mgcina.
Reopening these vital community spaces marks a new chapter in fostering community engagement and empowerment.
The community centre has long served as a cornerstone of community activity, hosting events ranging from meetings and church services to recreational activities and pension payouts.

Alongside the community hall, the library has been a hub of learning and knowledge-sharing, providing essential resources and educational opportunities to residents.
Recognising the importance of these facilities, the CoJ’s community development prioritised their refurbishment to better serve the evolving needs of the community.
Managed and implemented by the JDA, R3.3m refurbishment projects encompassed a comprehensive scope of works aimed at enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of the community hall and library.
For the community hall, these key enhancements were implemented:
• Caretaker’s office enhancements such as painting, glazing, and replacing window blinds.
• Passage improvements, including the replacement of the geyser and fluorescent light fittings.
• Foyer restoration involves the stripping, cleaning, and sealing of terracotta tiles.
• Kitchen upgrades such as installing a roller door, replacing wall tiles, and securing electrical wires.
• Toilet renovations, including basin unblocking, flush cistern mechanism replacement, and damaged wall tile replacement.

• Main hall repairs addressing roof leakage, ceiling replacement, and electrical network enhancements.
• Parking area enhancements include painting parking shades and parking lines, installing lights, and painting gutters and poles.
The library was first launched in 1991 and this was implemented in the upgrade:
• Office upgrades include scrubbing, smoothing, and repainting walls, attending to electricity, installing air conditioning, and painting ceilings.
• The study area and children’s area work involved the installation of built-in cupboards and repainting walls.
• The work on the activity rooms involved removing vinyl sheets, installing new ceramic tiles, painting walls, replacing double door glass, and installing new ceilings.
Repairs on the outside of the library included attending to roof leaks, painting pillars, rubberising the entrance ramp, removing and installing new doors, installing new burglar doors, and painting the palisade fence.
The renovations and refurbishments of the hall and library reflect the JDA’s commitment to efficiently delivering sustainable social and economic infrastructure projects.

The projects have also promoted economic empowerment and supported local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) by creating employment opportunities within the community.
Seven local SMMEs and 10 local labourers were engaged in the project, contributing to the economic upliftment of the area.
“The completion of this project underscores the JDA’s commitment to fostering inclusive development and creating spaces that foster community engagement and growth,” said Siyabonga Genu, the JDA’s Acting CEO.
“The reopening of the hall is another example of how the JDA, with a focus on sustainable development, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents through the provision of essential infrastructure and the promotion of economic growth,” he added.
