Don’t get distracted by a cellphone while driving – EMPD

Statistics have shown that 25% of motor vehicle accidents are caused by cellphone use while driving.

EMPD officers stop a concerning number of motorists found using their cellphones while driving.

Katlego Mphahlele, the EMPD media liaison officer, said statistics show that 25% of motor vehicle accidents are caused by cellphone use while driving.

“Motorists caught driving while using a cellphone are stopped and charged according to the EMPD traffic charge book.

“In the book, it is stipulated that no person may operate a motor vehicle with a cellphone. This charge for the offence is R500 and can be paid at any of our magistrate’s offices,” said Mphahlele.

Mphahlele said motorists should not text and drive.

“Do not answer your phone while driving. Rather, find a safe place to park your car and attend to the call.

“Connect your cellphone to a hands-free mode and pick your playlist before starting your car.

“Motorists should also map their navigation before they depart,” Mphahlele said.
