Born and raised in Alexandra, Johannesburg, Masekwameng drew inspiration from his mother, who cooked meals for local construction workers to support the family.

“Her determination, skill, and business acumen are what initially propelled me on this culinary journey,” he said.

His career began as a trainee at the Hilton Hotel in Durban, where he gained invaluable experience over six years, earning promotions along the way.

As his expertise grew, he represented SA cuisine at embassy events overseas, honing his skills and showcasing his creative flair.

In 2006, Masekwameng joined the TsogoSun, where his career continued flourishing.

He is celebrated for his innovative approach to traditional SA cuisine, presenting it in ways that surprise and delight diners.

“I believe SA food rivals the highest international standards. It’s about elevating our traditions while staying true to our roots,” Masekwameng said.

“Being part of these platforms has been challenging and rewarding. It’s incredible to see how cooking inspires people and changes lives. I take pride in sharing my knowledge and being part of their journeys,” he said.

Through his TV work, Masekwameng has seen South Africans embrace cooking as a necessity and a therapeutic and enjoyable activity.

“Many people have dreams tied to food, and my journey shows those dreams are possible with hard work and passion,” he added.

Despite his demanding career, Masekwameng values family time and credits his wife and daughter for keeping him grounded.

“This industry often takes us away from loved ones, so I make it a point to attend school events and spend quality time with my family,” he said.

Masekwameng is eager to expand his horizons. He is exploring the idea of launching his cooking show, combining his love for food, technology, gadgets and photography.

“I believe it’s time to share more of myself and my skills with a wider audience. I’m excited about showcasing my favourite dishes and connecting with people through this new venture,” he said.
