Local musician gives back through pad drive

Local artist saw a need in sanitary pads and decided to donate them as part of his Batho Pele Initiative.

Evans Mhlongo, widely known as Haughty Master, has launched the Batho Pele Initiative, a sanitary pad drive aimed at supporting women of all ages in his community of Thembisa, as well as in surrounding areas such as Kempton Park and Vosloorus.

“Batho Pele,” meaning People First, reflects Mhlongo’s commitment to breaking the stigma associated with menstruation and ensuring women have access to safe hygiene and menstrual products.

“My passion for helping the community started long ago when I ventured into the music industry,” said Mhlongo.

“I would perform at community events without charging a fee. Over time, my efforts evolved from musical contributions to offering tangible support.”

Mhlongo began his campaign in July 2024 to address menstrual health challenges in his community.

“To date, I’ve donated around 150 packs of sanitary pads, and I’m planning to distribute more,” he shared.

Looking to the future, Mhlongo hopes to expand his efforts by organizing a food parcel drive to further assist those in need.

Currently self-funded, Mhlongo has received some assistance through donations from a few supporters.

He envisions the Batho Pele Initiative growing beyond Thembisa to provide relief to communities across the nation.

“I want to see this initiative helping people not just in my community but nationwide,” he said.
