Police bust 318 suspects and seize 11 firearms in operations

Shanela continues to make strides in Ekurhuleni.

Law enforcement and other stakeholders arrested 318 people across Ekurhuleni’s policing precincts for various offences during operations from February 14 to 16.

They took three unlicensed firearms off the streets and shut down 11 illegal shebeens.

Among those arrested were 182 people detectives apprehended during suspect raids. These included 112 people for contact crimes, 36 for serious crimes, 32 for GBV and six for property crimes.

In Thembisa, police acted on intelligence that led them to a person involved in street robberies. On arriving at the person’s address in Ehlanzeni Section, Thembisa, the suspect tried to flee but was apprehended.

During the arrest, a magazine with three rounds of ammunition fell from the person’s possession.

He was handcuffed, and his premises were searched, resulting in the discovery of a black Glock firearm with its serial number removed and three cellphones believed to be stolen.

The investigation led police to a second address not far from where they found the firearm. There, they arrested a second person after finding them with a 9mm unlicensed pistol and three live rounds.

Both suspects were detained at Thembisa cells for possession of unlicensed firearms.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, praised the officers’ swift response in making the arrests. She also thanked community members for their continued collaboration with police.
