Bruce Maclean, a long-time Kempton Park resident, recently marked a milestone birthday, turning 89 on January 12.
Despite his age, Maclean remains active and energetic, attributing his long and healthy life to his passion for golf.
Born in Grahamstown (now Makhanda) in the Eastern Cape in 1936, Maclean later married Magda, and together they built a life filled with family, adventure, and sports.

Maclean’s love for golf began in 1964, and he has been a member of the Kempton Park Golf Club for 55 years.
He recalls his early days playing with caddies in Nelson Mandela Bay, eventually competing in tournaments.
Beyond golf, Maclean has also been an avid runner and tennis player, having completed an impressive 13 Comrades Marathons.
His dedication to sports has earned him recognition and admiration.
“For your health, sport is the best thing you can do. It keeps you fit and allows you to socialise with people,” he advised.
Maclean continues to play golf regularly with fellow pensioners at the Kempton Park Golf Club.
Maclean and his wife share a love for birdwatching and camping. They still take trips in their caravan, enjoying the great outdoors.
“I love birdwatching with my wife, we go for walks, and we still enjoy camping in our caravan. The key is to always stay active.”
With a family that includes three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, Maclean cherishes every moment with his loved ones.
Reflecting on his 89 years, Maclean remains grateful for each day.
“Every day, when I open my eyes and see that I am still alive, I thank God. I don’t have a set age I want to reach—when my time comes, it comes. But until then, I look forward to every day.”
