IIE Varsity College, an educational brand of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), recently announced the return of its National High Schools’ Quiz, now in its ninth year.

Open to Grade 11 learners nationwide, this competition gives students, teachers, and schools the chance to win a share of R100 000 in cash and prizes.

The quiz puts learners’ general knowledge to the test with questions spanning geography, history, science and nature, sport, entertainment, and current affairs.

Participants showcase their understanding of topics ranging from world capitals and key historical events to physics, chemistry, politics, economics, and technological advancements.

The competition is more about knowledge; it is designed to ignite curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and make learning fun.

The event provides a national platform for some of South Africa’s brightest young minds to engage, compete, and excel.

Cindy Christian, dean of humanities at The IIE’s Varsity College, highlights the quiz’s broader impact.

“Beyond the thrill of competition, the quiz nurtures critical thinking, problem-solving, and active learning, skills identified as key development areas in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025.

“The primary aim of the event is to encourage high school learners to broaden their horizons by engaging with diverse sources of information, which fosters a culture of continuous learning,” added Christian.

Regional finals will be at IIE Varsity College campuses in Gauteng (Midrand), KwaZulu-Natal (Durban North), Nelson Mandela Bay, and Cape Town.

The top eight learners will secure a place in the national grand finale on September 13 at IIE Varsity College, Cape Town.

Teachers are encouraged to nominate their students and support this initiative.
