UPDATE at 11:20 on March 19 – All routes around Kempton Park are flowing freely.
Motorists traveling through Kempton Park and surrounding areas this morning are facing heavy delays due to widespread protest action affecting several major routes.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has confirmed that demonstrations on the R21 southbound between Bapsfontein Road and the OR Tambo International Airport interchange have caused severe congestion.

Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes until the situation is resolved.
“We are aware of the ongoing protests,” said City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini. “We are gathering more information and will issue a formal statement as soon as further details become available.”
Road closures and affected routes:
EMPD Road Closure – Gauteng (GP):
- N12 Springs/Dayveton off-ramp (Johannesburg direction)
- R21 between R23 and R25
- N17 (Carnival City)
- R21 (Benoni off-ramp)
- N12 (between Putfontein and Kingsway off-ramps)
- R24 Gillooly’s Interchange (N12, R24)
Northern Region:
- ORTIA / R21: Not confirmed, as conflicting reports exist
- Affected Route: R21-South, then join N12-West, N3-South at Gillooly’s Interchange, off-ramp at M2-East Geldenhuys Interchange, into Germiston
Eastern Region:
- R51 (Kingsway Rd) near Modderbee Prison
- Affected Route: N12-West, then N3-South at Gillooly’s Interchange, off-ramp at M2-East Geldenhuys Interchange, into Germiston
Southern Region:
- Vosloorus CCC
- Affected Route: N3-North (Johannesburg direction), off-ramp at M2-East Geldenhuys Interchange, into Germiston
