Trace the geological roots at Melville Koppies
Melville Koppies open their gates every Sunday morning from 08:00 to 11:30.
Joburg as a city may be crumbling with failing water and energy infrastructure, but it is built on solid rock foundations that date back more than three billion years.
Visit Melville Koppies to see some of this geological history.
Come and see the faulted rocks. This is where the quartzite rock that we see on the surface was faulted over the basement granite and is still being squashed to form schist and kaolinite.

Ripple marks and mud cracks left on rocks show that Joburg was once “Joburg by the seaside”.
Hike to the top of the Koppie and see how the massive Vredefort meteorite struck near Parys two billion years ago and tilted the Koppies’ quartzite ridges 30 degrees to the south.
