Police operation yields success in clamping on crime

The operation aimed to stamp the State’s authority and help local police stations reduce crime.

The SAPS held a high-impact Operation Shanela on the R25 in Norkem Park on April 17.

Officers arrested more than 200 people in a co-ordinated crime-fighting effort spearheaded by Brigadier Lindani Ndlovu, the Kempton Park SAPS station commander.

He was joined by Brigadier Johanna Ngoma, the Brakpan SAPS station commander, and station commanders from the Ekurhuleni North and Central policing precincts.

Targeted interventions saw district detectives arrest 215 people. Of these arrests, 138 were for contact crimes, eight for contact-related offences, 10 for property-related crimes, and 46 for other serious offences.

Seventeen people were apprehended for GBV.

A roadblock along the P91/R25 saw officers issue seven traffic fines amounting to R4 100.

Thirteen undocumented individuals were arrested and will face legal proceedings pending the outcome of their immigration status checks. One vehicle was impounded for a tampered chassis.

Additional arrests at the roadblock included one for dealing in dagga, one for having drugs, another for having ammunition, drugs, and a dangerous weapon, and one for having illicit cigarettes.

The operation included a public awareness campaign by the SAPS Social Crime Prevention members and the Youth Desk.

They distributed pamphlets about crime prevention safety tips, and information on GBV.

The operation helped the local police station reduce crime.

Ndlovu praised the collective effort, “These arrests form part of our ongoing commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety and protection of our residents. Operations like this demonstrate the power of united policing efforts across districts.”
