Gauteng police arrest 88 in major crime crackdown

Between 9 and 15 May, Gauteng's Rapid Response Services arrested 88 suspects, recovered 40 hijacked and stolen vehicles, and seized four unlicensed firearms. Police also made 29 drug-related arrests during intensive operations across the province.

Between May 9 and May 15, Rapid Response Services comprising Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol members throughout Gauteng, arrested 88 suspects, recovering 40 motor vehicles and four firearms.

Officers participated in various concentrated operations, vehicle checkpoints, secure escorts and intensive patrols around Gauteng, which led to 42 arrests for serious crimes including assault common and GBH, possession of suspected stolen property, murder, rape, driving under the influence, malicious damage to property, fraud, shoplifting, robbery, illegal immigrant, contravention of protection order and theft.

A total of 40 hijacked and stolen motor vehicles were recovered with nine arrests for the possession of these vehicles.

Four unlicensed firearm was recovered accompanying eight arrests.

In further policing, 29 arrests were made for the possession of and dealing in drugs.

Heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and crystal methamphetamine were among those confiscated in these separate incidents.
Investigation continues in all cases.

The suspects will be appearing in the local magistrate’s courts across Gauteng.
