SANRAL steps in to repair dangerous R21 sinkhole

Emergency repairs will begin soon and the R154-million project brings with it job creation, skills training and economic development.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) is moving to repair an emergency sinkhole along the R21 northbound, near Olifantsfontein.

The R154-million project will not only address a major road hazard but also unlock job creation, training, and business opportunities for the surrounding community.

The sinkhole, which has raised significant safety concerns for motorists in and out of Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein, will be repaired over 11 months by appointed contractor, Terra Strata Construction.

The project is currently in its mobilisation phase, preparing the site and sourcing SMMEs and labourers. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-September.

“This is the second sinkhole in the area near the Olifantsfontein interchange,” said Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Gauteng Provincial Head.

“The presence of dolomite rock in this region increases the risk of sinkholes. We are closely monitoring the roads and remain committed to mitigating safety risks.”

Empowering the community

At a recent SMME information session in Kempton Park, hosted in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni, Project Manager Nontobeko Mathenjwa shared the broader impact of the initiative.

“This project is about more than road repairs. It’s about economic inclusion,” said Mathenjwa.

“We’ve built in opportunities for SMMEs, local labourers, designated groups, and even FET college students to benefit.”

The work will include:

  • Borehole drilling

  • Compact grouting

  • Road resurfacing

  • Traffic accommodation

Business and training opportunities

SANRAL has set contractor participation goals that prioritise SMMEs with CIDB grades 1 to 4, while also creating work packages that require no CIDB registration. These include:

  • Security services

  • Employee transport

  • Diesel supply

  • Mobile toilet hire

  • Plant hire

To ensure sustainability, SANRAL will offer skills training to all participating SMMEs and labourers, with a mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience.

In-service trainees and candidate engineers will also be integrated into the project for professional development.
