Sinkhole repairs to disrupt R21 traffic until FEBRUARY 2026
SANRAL urged motorists to plan their trips in advance and follow traffic signage and directions from flag personnel on site.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced the temporary closure of two slow lanes on the R21 north in Olifantsfontein.
The closure is will allow for the rehabilitation of a sinkhole and subsequent road repairs.

Dates: 10 October 2025 – 28 February 2026

Location: R21 Section 2 Northbound (km 0.3)

Duration: Approximately five months

Extent: The closure length of the two slow lanes (towards Pretoria) may vary but will not exceed 3km, except where necessary for safety reasons.
SANRAL’s Gauteng Provincial Head, Progress Hlahla, advised motorists to plan their trips in advance and follow traffic signage and directions from flag personnel on site.
“We urge road users to adhere to all signage and warnings during this essential rehabilitation work. It is not only for your safety but also for the safety of construction personnel on site,” said Hlahla.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes, including the M57 and M18, during the rehabilitation period.
SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and assures the public of its ongoing commitment to maintaining the safety and quality of South Africa’s national road network.
