Gauteng Health highlights mental health support for learners post-matric

Free mental health services and suicide prevention lines are available across the province.

With the matric results released on January 13, the Gauteng Department of Health (GDH) stated that while this period marks achievement for many learners, it is also an emotionally difficult time for those who failed or did not attain the results required for their preferred higher education programmes.

The GDH reminded learners that their matric results do not define their worth or determine their future, and that not achieving the desired outcome is a setback, but not the end.

It urges young people not to make permanent decisions based on temporary circumstances and to seek help when they feel overwhelmed.
“Learners experiencing emotional distress, depression or suicidal thoughts should use the free mental health services available at Gauteng’s primary healthcare facilities.

“Any person requiring services can present at their nearest primary healthcare facility (clinic). Where necessary, clients will be referred for specialist mental health services,” said the GDH.

The department urged learners, parents and caregivers to contact organisations that provide immediate emotional and suicide prevention support, such as these toll-free services:

• The South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s Suicide Prevention Line on 0800 567 567;
• The Suicide Crisis Line on 0800 21 22 23 or 0800 12 13 14;
• The Hope line on 0800 467 347 or 0800 611 197;
• SMS 31393 for support.

The GDH urged communities to support, listen without judgement and encourage young people to speak openly about their feelings.

It remains committed to ensuring access to mental healthcare and protecting the well-being of learners during this critical period.
