Executive Mayor Morero dismisses misleading claims on Rea Vaya feeder bus suspension

The Johannesburg Executive Mayor has rejected statements regarding the suspension of Rea Vaya feeder buses in Soweto, describing the claims as misleading and inconsistent with city governance procedures.

The Office of the Executive Mayor, Councillor Dada Morero, has raised concerns over a media statement issued by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Councillor Kenny Kunene, regarding the suspension of Rea Vaya feeder bus services in Soweto.

Morero rejected claims that the suspension was handled “unilaterally” and without proper consultation or technical input, describing the allegations as misleading and inconsistent with the City of Johannesburg’s governance processes.

He emphasised that all members of the Mayoral Committee are bound by the principle of collective responsibility, and that matters such as service suspensions must be addressed through established executive channels before being communicated publicly.

The mayor has formally written to Kunene, requesting evidence to substantiate the claims made in the statement, as well as an explanation for why internal executive procedures were not followed before its release.

The City of Johannesburg reiterated its commitment to restoring Rea Vaya feeder bus services in a lawful, sustainable and operationally sound manner, with the interests of commuters and residents remaining a priority.
