Major power line upgrade in Kempton Park to reduce outages

The project will see the replacement of ageing oil-filled cables with modern technology aimed at improving the reliability and stability.

Residents of Kempton Park can expect improvements to the local electricity network as the City of Ekurhuleni begins the final phase of an upgrade to the 66kV power line linking the Van Riebeeck Park and Glen Marais substations.

The project, which commenced on March 11, will see the replacement of ageing oil-filled cables with modern technology aimed at improving the reliability and stability of the electricity supply to surrounding areas.

The upgrade forms part of ongoing efforts by the city to strengthen its electricity infrastructure and reduce the likelihood of unplanned power outages.

Ward 15 Clr Amanda Davison said reliable electricity infrastructure is critical for both residents and local businesses.

“Reliable electricity infrastructure is essential for our residents and local businesses. This upgrade is a positive step toward improving supply stability in Kempton Park,” she said.

The project is expected to take approximately four to six months to complete.

Some of the construction work will take place along Elgin Road, a key route in the area, and motorists and residents may experience temporary traffic adjustments or minor disruptions while work is underway.

Construction will also extend beyond the well-known Elgin Bridge, an area familiar to many motorists travelling through Kempton Park.

The city’s electricity department, together with consultants and contractors, has undertaken planning to minimise disruption to both traffic and nearby residents.

Davison has urged the community to remain patient while the upgrade is being carried out.

“I remain optimistic that once this stage of the upgrade is completed, we will see fewer unplanned power outages in our area,” she said.

Ward 15 residents and the broader Kempton Park community will continue to receive updates as the project progresses.
