One dead, one critical in R25 crash near Serengeti Estate

On arrival, two male occupants of the bakkie, the driver and passenger, were found trapped inside the vehicle.

A male driver died, and his passenger was left critically injured following a collision between a double-cab bakkie and an interlinked side-tipper truck on the R25 near Serengeti Estate in Kempton Park, within the City of Ekurhuleni, this afternoon.

According to City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson, William Ntladi, rescue teams from the Olifantsfontein Fire Station received a call at approximately 13:35 reporting an entrapment and responded swiftly.

“On arrival, two male occupants of the bakkie, the driver and passenger, were found trapped inside the vehicle, while the truck driver had sustained minimal injuries,” said Ntladi.

Rescue personnel used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment, commonly known as the Jaws of Life, to free the entrapped victims from the wreckage.

Paramedics provided pre-hospital medical treatment to all three patients before transporting them to the nearest medical facilities.

Despite efforts to stabilise him, the bakkie driver succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

Traffic was severely affected, with one lane temporarily closed while emergency services conducted rescue operations and cleared the scene.

The incident was handed over to EMPD officers for further investigation. The deceased was later removed by Forensic Pathology Services and transported to a pathology facility.
