Child among two dead in crash, alleged drunk driver arrested

Following this morning's crash, officers conducted an alcohol test on the Audi driver, which returned a reading of 0.64.

This morning, March 20, officers from the EMPD’s Clayville Precinct responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of Olifantsfontein Road and South View, involving two vehicles.

“It is alleged that a 30-year-old male driver of an Audi, who was under the influence of alcohol, collided head-on with a Toyota Avanza,” said EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato.

A young girl, believed to be between 10 and 11 years old, and the driver of the Avanza sustained fatal injuries. Both were declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“A 16-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to Tembisa Tertiary Hospital for urgent medical treatment.”

Makgato said officers conducted an alcohol test on the Audi driver, which returned a reading of 0.64.

He was arrested at the scene and is expected to face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, culpable homicide, and fleeing the scene.
