Ekurhuleni unveils R25m bridge to boost mobility in Thembisa

Construction of the bridge began in 2021 but was delayed due to contractual challenges before being completed under the municipality’s broader “Fixing the Frontline” programme.

The City of Ekurhuleni has officially opened the R25m bridge on Flint Mazibuko Drive, which connects Winnie Mandela and Hospital View in Thembisa.

The opening was led by Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, together with MMC for Roads and Transport Lindiwe Mnguni.

Construction of the bridge began in 2021 but was delayed due to contractual challenges before being completed under the municipality’s broader “Fixing the Frontline” programme.

The bridge is expected to improve mobility for motorists by providing quicker access to nearby healthcare facilities, while also easing traffic congestion in the area.

Xhakaza said the project demonstrates the city’s commitment to improving infrastructure and reconnecting communities.

“We want to say that the era of disconnection is over. We want to bring convenience to the people of Thembisa,” said Xhakaza.

He added that while the bridge has been opened to traffic, further work in the surrounding corridor is still ongoing.

“We have committed to a full reconstruction. While we celebrate the reopening of this road, it must be clear that our work in this corridor is far from over.

“We still have Montsu Bridge, which is nearing completion, and we will ensure it is handed over to the community. For now, a pedestrian bridge has been provided to connect neighbouring areas,” he said.

Xhakaza noted that the project has also had economic benefits for local residents.

“About six small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) participated in the project, and a portion of the investment has benefited local contractors,” he said.

Mnguni said the opening of the bridge marks an important milestone despite earlier delays.

“It is a big achievement in terms of service delivery. There were delays due to various processes and the rain, but when we inspected the project, we saw progress and are pleased that the bridge is now fully open,” she said.

She added that work continues on other infrastructure in the area, including the Montsu Bridge, for which timelines will be communicated once finalised.

Residents from Winnie Mandela Park and Hospital View have welcomed the opening of the bridge, noting that it will significantly improve access to essential services, particularly nearby hospitals, while also helping to ease traffic congestion.
