The EMPD High-Speed Unit arrested nine suspects during operations conducted on Saturday, April 11.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent, Kelebogile Thepa, three motorists were arrested for speeding, while six others were apprehended for contravening the Immigration Act and interfering with officers while on duty.

During a speed monitoring operation on Atlas Road in Kempton Park, officers set up speed-measuring equipment and arrested two male motorists for exceeding the 80km/h speed limit.

“Officers then moved to a second operation point on North Reef Road in Bedfordview, where a blue KWM motorcycle was recorded travelling at 89km/h in a 60km/h zone.

“When officers attempted to stop the rider, he failed to comply and sped off. A pursuit followed, and the suspect later abandoned the motorcycle and fled on foot,” said Thepa.

While officers were in the process of impounding the motorcycle, a group of seven men approached them, accompanied by the suspect.

On further investigation, officers established that all seven individuals were in the country illegally.

They were unable to produce any form of identification when requested.

All nine suspects, aged between 24 and 41, were arrested and are facing charges of speeding, contravening the Immigration Act, failing to comply with lawful instructions, and interfering with officers in the execution of their duties.

The suspects were detained at their respective police stations and are expected to appear in their relevant magistrates’ courts soon.
