Govender was completely unaware of the recognition until the surprise reveal at the school.
Hoërskool Birchleigh principal Carmen Govender has been named teacher of the week by 94.7 on May 5, as part of the station’s Teacher Appreciation Week.
She was also recognised as the best teacher in the world.
The nomination was made in secret by a parent and later supported by learners who voted in her favour.
Govender was completely unaware of the recognition until the surprise reveal at the school.

She was called to assist what she believed was a learner who had fainted in class, only to arrive to cheering learners and discover she was being honoured live on air.
“I was caught completely off guard,” said Govender.
“On arrival, the learners started cheering and clapping. It was only then I realised I was live on 94.7.”
She said the recognition left her in disbelief, but also deeply humbled.
“Although I am extremely grateful, as educators, we don’t teach for accolades. What we do is about making a difference and ensuring every learner has the opportunity to thrive,” she said.
Govender’s career spans 31 years in education, beginning at Tugela Secondary School in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal. She joined Hoërskool Birchleigh in 2012 as an Afrikaans teacher before later teaching English.
She went on to serve as acting deputy principal before being officially appointed principal in 2023.
Govender said her leadership approach is focused on cultivating a culture of growth, transformation and excellence within the school.

She added that the school’s mission is to ensure learners leave with a clear sense of purpose, ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
“We are incredibly proud of the impact our matric learners are making beyond the school gates,” she said.
Govender also highlighted the importance of parental involvement in education.
“Education is a partnership between home and school,” she said.
“We need parents to be hands-on and involved in their children’s education.”
She added that active parental engagement is essential for learner success and overall school development.
Hoërskool Birchleigh offers a wide range of academic, sporting and cultural opportunities, and Govender said continued parental support plays a key role in sustaining excellence.
She concluded by saying she is deeply honoured by the recognition and remains committed to driving continued improvement within the school community.
