Seeing a geography textbook come to life

Pretoria’s Lyttelton High Grade 12 geography learners visited Melville Koppies.

Spirited Grade 12 geography learners from Lyttelton High School in Pretoria received quite a surprise when they visited Melville Koppies in May on what was described as the coldest day of 2026.

The learners experienced a freezing southerly wind as they explored the natural site, gaining first-hand insight into geographical concepts.

They saw what closely spaced contour lines represent on a map as they made their way up steep inclines, observed how rivers incise through ridges, and debated why the river had carved a path through a specific point.

Despite many being unprepared for Johannesburg’s cold weather, their enthusiasm soon warmed them up.

Part of their activity included navigating to different workstations across the Koppies, covering more than 3 kilometres of ups and downs along the network of trails.

Three hours later, the learners were ready to relax on the bus ride back home.

Melville Koppies offers school tours for learners from Grade R to matric at a cost of R50 per learner, while teachers enter free of charge.
