Taxi driver killed, five passengers critically injured in Thembisa crash

A 26-year-old taxi driver died and five passengers were critically injured after a minibus taxi collided with a tipper truck on Andrew Mapheto Drive towards Thembisa on June 7.

A taxi driver lost his life, and five passengers sustained critical injuries following a collision involving a tipper truck and a minibus taxi on Andrew Mapheto Drive towards Thembisa on June 7.

According to preliminary reports, the minibus taxi was transporting passengers from Alexandra to Thembisa when it collided with the tipper truck at approximately 20:20.

The 26-year-old taxi driver became trapped inside the wreckage.

Emergency services used the Jaws of Life to free him, but despite their efforts, he was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

The five critically injured passengers were transported to Thembisa Tertiary Hospital for medical treatment. The driver of the tipper truck escaped the crash without injury.

EMPD officials remained on the scene while emergency services attended to the victims. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes as Andrew Mapheto Drive was temporarily closed to traffic.

Officials confirmed that a case of culpable homicide will be opened at the relevant police station as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

The EMPD has urged all motorists and road users to obey traffic regulations, exercise caution on the roads and remain patient when travelling near active accident scenes.
