STRUWWELPETER has never been a great fan of DSTV, especially towards the end of the month and the beginning of the new month when the whole system goes off and a notification appears on the screen to inform me that I need to confirm that my subscription is still valid.
But this is just silly. Some ten years ago I gave them a debit order and there have never been problems since. And incidentally, it would be very good if they could stop promoting a new film in the middle of the one you are watching. Very confusing – especially if you are trying to follow a nasal American accent.

Some Eskom functionary has announced that Eskom may fall flat for two weeks at a time. Cape Town City, however, has made sure they are not going to be caught short. So they are spending R245-million on extra power for essentials like drainage and availability of water. On the other hand, there is a little bit of good news as well, because the first element of Medupi has successfully been brought on line.

Last week, a lioness in a lion park grabbed an American tourist who was driving with open windows, despite all the warnings not to do so. Tragic, but one can’t help thinking that Americans can be very naive because they all suffer from an excess of Disney culture.

This interesting prayer was given in Kansas at the opening session of their Senate. It seems prayer still upsets some people. When Pastor Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities but this is what they heard:
“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says:
‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism.
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have abused power and called it politics.
We have embezzled public funds and called it essential expenses.
We have insitutionalised bribery and called it sweets of office.
We have coveted our neighbour’s possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!”
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In six short weeks, the Central Christian Church, where Rev Wright is pastor, logged more than 5 000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea.
