‘It is in my lungs, mouth…’

This stench that is hanging in the air in Kempton Park is everywhere.

It is in my lungs when I sleep. I can taste it in my mouth. I can’t even enjoy food any more, because the smell is always being hijacked by sewer stench.

It is in my house, my curtains, my washing on the line. It is not “just a smell” because we all know the smell must be invisible harmful particles in the air.

It is in my airways and therefore in my body, going into my cells just like the rest of the already taxing pollution in the air.

But this is different, because I’m constantly trying to block it out, without success. Maybe it is because we now know the cause of the smell.

A local rich landowner’s greed trumps a whole town’s living standards. Last year we thought it was just maybe a neighbour’s lawn dressing from a few houses away but then it lingered for three weeks.

We thought it might have been a sewerage plant malfunction. Surely anything but deliberate! There must be laws against the health, safety and pollution of a city like this.

And if there aren’t, then the people in power should check their schedules and make and enforce them. This is not what we pay taxes for, this is not why we live in Kempton Park. If this is going to be an annual “tolerance”, I’m definitely considering moving to another town where people have higher standards and basic respect for fellow humans and animals.
