I received the newspaper of September 5 and was pleased to see an article written regarding the stench that hovers over Glen Marais and I thought, at last, an explanation!

Can you just imagine my horror when I read the article. The comments, “the smell disappears after the first rain…”, what absolute hogwash. The smell lingers for months. However, the smell is becoming increasingly worse every year.

The smell on September 12 hit me as I entered the area and was so acrid that it burnt my throat. It took all my physical willpower not to vomit.

The smell permeated my house and no amount of air freshener or using an air purifier, aided much to dissipate the stench. Opening the windows and doors is defeating the object.

On September 13, upon exiting my home in the morning, the stench was so bad that apart from my throat burning, I was forced to re-enter my home retching uncontrollably.

If the smell alone is burning my throat, surely the molecules the human excrement is emanating, which are airborne, and causing the stench, are disease laden?

It is an uncomfortable thought that I breathe in this “air”, which is inescapable, unless I leave the area.

Seeing as the farmers use human excrement to add nutrition and minerals to the soil saying it is beneficial to the growth of their crops, and that it has been used for seven years would, considering the article, realise it is time they found a solution to the stench that usually stays around until way into December.
