A motorist, clocking 200km/h “not be late for a meeting”, was arrested on the R21 at the Pomona bridge on Sunday morning.
Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said this early morning speed law enforcement yielded 11 arrests of risk-takers.
“This stretch of the freeway is notorious for single vehicle horrific accidents attributed to excessive speeding. The operation commenced at 6am and was
completed around 9am,” Kgasago said.
A 43-year-old male driver in a Mercedes Benz sedan was clocked at 200km/h and advanced the reason he was late for an appointment. He was nabbed at 6.12am.
Three were caught doing speeds in excess of 170km/h and the remainder were arrested when they registered speeds of between 161km/h and 167km/h. Reasons given by the speedsters varied from being late for a church service, late for a plane to being late for a funeral.
All the arrestees were released on bail of between R1 000 and R1 500 after being charged for reckless and negligent driving at Kempton Park Police Station.
