On May 22 we happened to be browsing for a place to stay in Glen Marais and we came across a link.
We called the agent and was told that this property, together with another property in Glen Marais, had been taken.
We asked a fellow colleague, who is white, to call and ask if the property was available and alas, he was told it was, no one has signed for it yet.
Just a reminder that black people are still disadvantaged in this country.
The estate agency replies:
Thank you for the opportunity to reply to Ms Gwara’s complaint.
I would firstly like to reject any suggestion of racism in this matter. A large percentage of our tenants are people of colour. We do not discriminate on race, gender or religion.
We take our instructions from the owners. The owner informed us that the property was no longer available.
This we conveyed to Ms Gwara when she enquired about the property. The owner later phoned back and asked us to continue to look for a tenant.
Had Ms Gwara phoned back herself the following day, the answer would have been the same: the property is now available.
We regret that Ms Gwara refused to accept our legitimate explanation and rather chose to play an unjust and unwarranted race card.
