JOHANN JORDAAN, DA ward 91 councillor, writes:
On behalf of all of the councillors in Kempton Park, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all who were involved in the elections.
Now that the dust has settled and everything is back to normal, it is a time to reflect on the DA’s success in the area. The final results prove that the DA won every ward in Kempton Park.
If the trend continues into the 2016 local government elections, the DA will run wards 13, 15, 16, 17, 91 and 100.
None of this success would be possible without the patience of voters, many of whom waited in the queues for hours. Every vote counts and it is a badge of pride that so many chose to come out and make their mark.
Aside from being a civic responsibility and the only way to ensure your voice is heard in government, it is a right millions fought and many died for.
Also, sincere thanks to the IEC officials and all of the many party agents who served tirelessly in the 29 voting stations across Kempton Park.
Many had an early start in order to be at their posts by 5am to make sure that voting in their respective stations went as smoothly as possible. All observers and vote counters deserve a special mention as it is exhausting to serve voters through the day and count through the night, many only finishing in the early hours of May 8.
A special mention must go to every officer from Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and the South African Police Services who worked long hours to keep voters safe during voting and observers and counters safe through the counting process.
Without the work provided by election observers from political parties and media houses both local and international, South Africa would not be able to call its elections free, fair and transparent.
All of the work by all of those involved in the election, both on the day and in the months leading up to it, have set a solid foundation for the next elections.
