On June 3 at about 5.20pm, while travelling on my motorbike south along Modderfontein Road, I noticed a black new model Golf Polo with tinted windows frantically trying to pass two white vehicles in front of it, dodging from side to side and even trying to squeeze between them.
As soon as the white vehicle in the right hand lane had moved forward sufficiently, I overtook the white vehicle in the left hand lane and the black Golf Polo. I moved into the left hand lane and created some distance between myself and the three cars.
About half a kilometre later, either underneath or just after the Gautrain bridge, I heard and felt a massive impact into the back of my bike, propelling me into the air. I only recall coming down against the back left passenger door window and seeing the back left gold mag wheel of the black Golf Polo before landing on the tarmac, tumbling and sliding to an eventual halt.
I assume the same vehicle ran over my ankle causing a serious compound fracture. I did not see the vehicle approaching me, it was a total surprise. The black Golf Polo sped away, turning the accident into a hit and run.
My motorbike travelled a few hundred metres before bursting into flames and exploding as described by witnesses assisting me at the accident scene.
The members of the public who stopped to assist me were fantastic, collecting my belongings that were strewn down the road and keeping my wife informed of my condition – thank you to all of you.
Also thank you to the Emer-G-Med paramedics who were very professional and compassionate.
I urgently need to find more facts about what happened:
Did anybody witness the accident and can furnish me with more details? Has this vehicle been taken to a panel beater in the area for repairs? The car must have suffered substantial damage to its front left bodywork.
Was such a vehicle stolen in the area? Which might explain why it was being driven like a maniac.
