Gold, bronze for Piketh
An ex-pupil of Hoërskool Kempton Park, André Olivier, won a bronze medal in the 800m
KEMPTON Park bowler and school teacher, Colleen Piketh, won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
She also teamed up with Tracy-Lee Botha to win gold in the pairs competition.
Although “robbed” of a medal play-off spot at the world singles in Australia by an inferior shot difference, in spite of being joint leader of her section, Piketh strode to a brilliant bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.
She beat her Northern Ireland opponent 21-10 to step up even further in the world singles rankings.
In the women’s pairs Piketh and Botha went down 26-10 to Norfolk Islands. That blow meant they had win their last two games, and well, against Samoa and Scotland to qualify.
They did just that, beating Samoa 26-6 and Scotland 16-14 in a superb effort. They ended behind Norfolk Islands on shot difference after they had been dumped by that side in round one.
They met England’s Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch in a nail bite final, which the South Africans won 20-17.
The South Africans were 16-11 behind after 14 heads but fought back to pull back a 17 all draw after the 18th and last head. That was too much for the English team and South Africa won the extra head to take the gold medal.
An ex-pupil of Hoërskool Kempton Park, André Olivier, won a bronze medal in the 800m. Olivier, who matriculated in 2007, is current a post graduate student at Pukke.
Earlier this year he came fourth at the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Poland. He also won a bronze medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships in the same country.
