Mpho Ndlovu won the 2015 Sarens Edenvale Marathon on March 8.
The marathon attracted athletes from all over including Tembisa.
The man from Emfihlweni, beat his own previous record of 2:35 by four minutes.
“I looked at the time of last year’s winner. He finished in 2:30, so I kept that time in mind while I was training. I knew if I could beat that time, my chances would be better,” he said.
Ndlovu said this year the race was not easy, but it was enjoyable.
“You have to have lots of energy and be able to conserve it,” said Ndlovu.
He said he knew he had the race in the back when he passed the 32 kilometre mark.
“Leons Hkoana was in front of me for a long time, but at about 28 kilometres I could see he was tied and I overtook him. From then on, I could see I was on-course,” said Ndlovu.
He added that the training his coach designed for him assisted with his win.
“I trained on lots of hills. During the race, I started slow and then picked up some speed. My coach derived a programme that would help me work on this. He told me what to do and when to alternate the speed and mileage,” he said.
Reuben Maapola finished third in the 42.2 kilometre race.
Caroline Wostmann was the first woman to cross the line for the 42.2 kilometre women’s race. She was followed by Enie Molatseli and Thandeka Nhlengethwa, who finished second and third respectively.
