Kempton vets romp to 7-0 win against Latins

The second half was a bit of a procession, with Kempton perhaps trying to play too much football and over-elaborating.

After a washout in December last year, Kempton Park Football Club’s vets played their re-arranged first-round cup tie against Latins on Monday night and romped to their biggest win of the season, 7-0.

Straight from the kick-off Latins launched an attack on a seemingly sleepy Kempton defence and only a late intervention from Thoko Zulu, who whipped the ball away from a Latins striker, prevented a strike on goal.

For the rest of the half that was as good as it got for the visitors as Kempton took total control.

Three minutes in, Warren Gardner controlled expertly and put Tyrone Young in on goal. Young made no mistake, slotting home easily.

The second goal was not long in coming. John Evans played a well-weighted pass for Grant Ramsay to charge onto, and the midfielder struck the ball perfectly, high into the Latins net.

Kempton were now rampant, and Gardner again provided Young with a perfect pass. The striker rode his luck when the ball fell for him after a 50-50 challenge, chipping it sweetly over an onrushing keeper to make it 3-0.

Gardner, who hitherto had been wasteful in front of goal, made amends when he sprinted across the face of the 18-yard box, leaving three defenders in his wake before powering a low left-footed drive into the bottom right-hand corner.

Four-nil at half-time and the game was over as a contest – although Latins were hardly contesting much.

The second half was a bit of a procession, with Kempton perhaps trying to play too much football and over-elaborating. Gardner blasted over and Young failed to finish a couple of times before the former sent Nathi Shange, who had worked tirelessly all night, through with a run on goal.

Shange has struck better shots and his long-range effort past a badly positioned goalkeeper seemed to take an eternity to reach its target. But hit the back of the net it did, and it was 5-0.

Young completed his hat-trick when Gardner, who was provider-in-chief all night, broke down the left, cut inside and slid the ball into his path for a simple finish.

The rout was completed when Shange, put in a great position by a Gardner pass, fizzed the ball past a hapless goalie who had already had a terrible evening.

Kempton’s women’s team drew 2-2 with top of the league Luso Africa away at Hattingh Park. They followed this up with a 2-1 victory in the cup away against JvW Juniors in Bedfordview.
