Sponono FC wins over City Spares FC

When the penalty shootout came to an end the score was 4-3 in favour of Sponono FC

Sponono FC beats City Spares FC in a Top 8 tournament on the dusty soccer field of Phomolong section on March 11.

Sponono FC coach Amos Madubanya said their final game was difficult because the players were not attacking as they were a bit tired.

“We played the second semi-final, that is why they were tired but we managed to control the game and we managed to close the gaps where we were lacking.

“We did not have any substitutes in the first half because we were containing them and my boys were playing nicely, even though we were under pressure, so there was no necessity to replace players.

“We just wanted to control the game in the first half and see what we can do in the second half,” said Madubanya.

He said they mostly had half-chances at scoring because City Spares FC “was pressing, not giving us a breather and we were playing on transition in the first half, trying to catch them on the counter-attack.”

He blamed fatigue and said they did not get enough rest as they were only given an hour’s rest.

“In the second half we were playing well but the guys were rushing. The interpasses and interchanges at the back were intact and we had a lot of chances, the guys were not calm. One needs calmness when they are in the 18 area or 16 area box but they were rushing.

“We couldn’t score, the opponent’s goalkeeper was very good because he saved a lot of goals.

“It was getting dark and the game could not be finished at a scheduled time and both teams agreed to go to penalty shootout because the score was 0-0.”

When the penalty shootout came to an end the score was 4-3 in favour of Sponono FC.
