From the first whistle, both teams took bold strides to try and make it onto the score sheet, but it was the Ivory Park Old Crocks who registered the first points when their reliable striker Jabu “Sjava” Mkhabela scored from a long range five minutes into the game.
Their opponents, Limpopo, seemed more composed about the lead and increased the momentum in their fight to equalize.
Ready to make his mark in the fast-paced game, attacking midfielder George Mabala of Limpopo Masters managed to lead Ivory Park keeper Tebogo Ratlou up the garden path when he put his only goal behind the net to let his team equalize.
This was followed by another goal shortly afterwards that was plunged in by Mkhabela of the Ivory Park Masters who scored a brace for his team. Against the run of play, Jacob Makua made sure Limpopo Masters went to half-time with an equalizer by scoring the second goal. At the end of the first half, the score was 2-2. When the teams returned, both sides displayed impressive soccer skills and both were not prepared to take a loss.
Limpopo Masters added a goal from a free kick by George Mabala. Ivory Park’s Zakes Makatane scored a third equalizing goal.
The game ended in a 3-3 draw. Organiser Ricky Mokgalaka said the match was part of keeping older people on the field and aims to promote fitness.
“As football organisers, we strongly condemn Old Crocks’ players sitting in taverns drinking beers. They should rather join us and play football. In today’s generation, we are being attacked by so many illnesses. It is best for the whole township to participate in sport and exercise regularly,” added Mokgalaka.
He said the two sides enjoyed a pleasant encounter and described the players as being ‘on fire’.
