The success of the inaugural Glacier Cradle Traverse three-day mountain bike stage race is reflected in the return of its defending champions for this year’s second edition of the event at Avianto Lifestyle Estate in the Cradle of Humankind from April 6-8.
Danny Fowler and Andrew Stockwell of Team Continental are back to defend their men’s team title, while Yolande de Villiers also returns to defend her overall women’s title.
Fowler in particular said last year’s inaugural event impressed them to such an extent that they didn’t hesitate to sign up again.
“After day one last year we were blown away because they integrated all the mountain bike parks in the area into one route. Some of the routes we’ve never been able to ride before so we were super impressed. I would say to any riders thinking about it, this is definitely an event worth doing,” he said.
De Villiers heads into this race as a dominant force on the Glacier Series, having also won the Glacier Storms Rivers Traverse last August.
The field also includes Sarah Hill, the mixed champion from August’s Glacier Storms River Traverse, as well as leading financial analyst Dawie Roodt and Avianto CEO Trevor D’Oliveira.
This year the Glacier Cradle Traverse has included several new initiatives to add to its status as a fun, family friendly event that caters for every level of rider.
Young riders over the age of eight will be able to compete in the Final Stage of the race and over their own 10-kilometre route. Their R100 entry fee will be donated towards the series’ Save the Rhino campaign. And busy Gauteng riders can take advantage of the new two-day weekend package option.
