Tembisa golfers vie for title of club champion

Fifty-seven golfers took part at The Tembisa Golf Club Championship.

The Tembisa Golf Club Championship kicked off at the Kempton Park Country Club on April 29.

The 2018 club championship is a two-day event that saw 57 golfers take to the fairway one day one, fiercely competing to be crowned the best Tembisa golfer for 2018.

This annual club championship is hosted by the Tembisa Golf Club and is being played over 36 holes on both days April 29 and May 1.

The club’s secretary, Benjamin Monyanyedi, said the 2018 championship is once again sponsored by Kempton Park Country Club (KPCC).

Judging by the Sunday round, this event promised once again that it is going to be a huge success.

Defending champion Phumlani Maluka has turned professional and he is no longer eligible to participate in this event.

With Maluka not defending, the championship was wide open.

Past champions like Francis Tsotetsi, Jerry Mosia, Joko Makhoba, Broadia Matlogela and David Mbene could also emerge from the doldrums and give everyone a run for their money.

“All the hard work of the last three months will come to pass on Tuesday when someone becomes Tembisa’s best for 2018,” said Monyanyedi.

George Mokela, who practises at the Ebuhleni golfing facility, was also one of the most likely champions.

“George is very long off the tees, very consistent with his iron play and deadly with the putter. All that placed him very close to be a cut above the rest,” Monyanyedi explained.

Jerry Mosia is another hot contender because he plays off a two handicap, strikes the golf ball solidly and is compact with his swings.

Monyanyedi believes that Mosia, who hails from Katlehong, was also a likely contender to repeat his win of 2016, taking the championship honours.

“Jerry, who is now a Tembisa resident, had pressure of winning the golf tournament for the second time and having golfers like Themba Mazibuko to contend with, it was never going to be easy for him.

“This event has attracted veteran golfers like Reuben Motsomotso, Andries Maenetja, Zacharia Moremi and Jonathan Tau,” Monyanyedi mentioned.

He said besides the coveted trophies for the champion and the B-division champion, there were more prizes to be awarded like the longest drive and the worst golfer.

“Golfers have so much to fight for until the tournament ends.

“All club championship events have produced dramatic finishes and this one is no different as the stakes were so high. The champion gets 12-month bragging rights for being the best golfer in every square metre of the huge township.

“He gets the honour of a standing ovation every time there are other events. He gets to decide who he plays with and gets all the great prizes and accolades that come with being the best gentleman of the game,” said Monyanyedi.

The Tembisan will reveal the winner of The Tembisa Golf Club Championship in the next edition as the second leg of the tournament was played on Workers’ Day.
