Academy swimmers’ season ends

They were quite busy in recent weeks competing in several galas.

Swimmers of Aquatic Academy in Croydon had been quite busy the past weeks, taking part in various galas.

Level three regionals: Four swimmers competed in the three-day event at Hillcrest pool in Pretoria.

Keiryn Letley was not well at all but managed to qualify for eight finals, winning one gold medal in the 50m butterfly in a personal best time of 30.67. She also won two silver and two bronze medals and was the top point scorer for Dynamos.

Tambai Dutiro has worked well this past season and from not qualifying last year he won a silver medal in the 100m backstroke. He swam in two finals.

Clayton Malaza qualified for three final events and swam seven personal bests. At 16 years of age, he competes in the 16-18 age group.

Clayton Malaza qualified for three final events and swam seven personal bests.

Mikayla Pon aged up one day too early, to compete at the level two championships. Ten-year-old swimmers are allowed to swim at level two even with level three qualifying times. Unfortunately for Mikayla she aged up to 11 and was still a level three swimmer so had to compete in Pretoria. She swam three personal best times.

Central Gauteng level two end of year gala: Aquatic Academy’s level two swimmers competed for ESP Piranhas.

Morgan Corns was ESP’s top point scorer, attaining eight final positions, one silver and one bronze medal (111 points).

Annebel van Wyk followed closely, scoring 104 points. She scored with eight final positions and one silver medal.

Kerrin Burgess, who was only available for half of the event, scored on three finals, winning a bronze medal. Christina Pon scored with five final positions and Ashley Corns with three.

Level one regionals: This entry group into competitive swimming is always filled with fun and took place at the Delville pool in Germiston.

Aquatic Academy had seven swimmers competing in the ESP Piranha team, along with swimmers from Debbie Mcgee and Tiga Tiger.

A lot of talent was noted and many lessons learned which will hopefully assist all these swimmers to level two regionals next season. Most swimmers swam their best times.

Christina Pon achieved two level two qualifying times and went on to enter the CGA level two event at Ellis Park. She was the top point scorer for ESP on 157 points. Second place was Zimasa Ngqawana (141), third Qamar Ngqawana (111), fourth Erin Longhurst (105 points) and fifth Mogale Kgaswe (103).
