Krisjan grand slams his way to a win
Krisjan cemented his dominance in the second set to finish as King of Africa ahead of 75 other players.
The African Grand Slam drew to a dramatic finish in Soweto with Kempton Park resident Duncan Krisjan clinching the fifth edition hosted by TennisLabSA.
The men’s open singles was contested between Tynoe Alufeyo from Zimbabwe and the lefty Krisjan, who squared off in a tit-for-tat first set tussle that went to a tiebreaker with nothing much to separate the two.
Krisjan cemented his dominance in the second set to finish as King of Africa ahead of 75 other players from Botswana, Cameroon, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Alufeyo would, however, get his revenge against Krisjan in the men’s doubles pairing with left-handed maestro Saidi Moruane to oust defending champions, Siyabulela Nkachela and Krisjan.
“This has been a watershed moment in our young existence as TennisLabSA and we look forward to the growth of the African Grand Slam in years to come,” said Siyabulela Nkachela, chief executive sport engineer of TennisLabSA.
The African Grand Slam received a timely boost from Tennis South Africa via the R20 000 prize money and tennis balls which were essential in the success of an event of this magnitude, Nkachela ended.
