‘Flying’ attorney is off to France in July
Evert Scholtz is the 11th Barnstormers member to be awarded national colours.
A longtime member of the Barnstormers Model Flying Club and local attorney, Evert Scholtz, will represent South Africa at the Control Line Precision Aerobatics World Championships in France in July.
Fellow Barnstormer Keith Renecle of Centurion will also attend the championships.
Control line flying is the oldest model flying sport. The aircraft is controlled through two lines of 19m attached to the plane.
Flying in a circle, a sequence of 18 manoeuvres forms the world championship schedule, all done in a five-minute flight. All manoeuvres start and end 1.5m above the ground and the plane flies at about 70km/h.
In comparison to radio control, it is a relatively cheap sport.
Scholtz has been a Kemptonian all his life. Born here in 1959, he attended Laerskool Kreft and matriculated at Hoërskool Kempton Park in 1977.
After doing his national service in the Air Force, he enroled at the University of Pretoria and was admitted as an attorney in 1989. In the same year, he and Jan Joubert formed the partnership of Joubert Scholtz Attorneys, a well-known law firm in Kempton Park.
Scholtz became a member of Barnstormers Model Flying Club in 1982 and presently serves as vice-chairperson of the club.
He was recently awarded national colours in control line precision aerobatics. He is the 11th Barnstormers member to be awarded national colours.
If you are of school going age you can join Barnstormers’ youth development programme for free and be taught by one of the club’s Protea pilots in all aspects of the sport.
