Powerico Winter Games are on in Tembisa
Powerico winter games attract teams from as far as Limpopo.
The Powerico Winter Games started its 2018 edition at Winnie Mandela Sport Ground on Saturday.
Founder of the tournament Power Makhura said this year’s edition will see 32 teams locking horns for a first prize of R110 000.
Speaking at the launch of the games on June 21, Makhura said the winning team would also receive a floating trophy, medals and new soccer kit.
“The runner-up will get R20 000, while the third prize is R7 500. The team that comes fourth will get R3 500,” said Makhura.

He said for this year’s tournament they have suspended one team from participating due to lack of discipline at the previous edition of the tournament.
“We want to show other teams that we follow FIFA rules and if a team does not abide by the constitution, we suspend that team. We also have a player that has been suspended.
“In the last tournament his team lost in the semi-finals and he tried to fight the referee. We won’t condone such behaviour,” said Makhura. He said the winter games were growing, looking at the love and support they get from soccer fans around Gauteng and outside.
“Our aim is to take children off the streets during the winter holidays and by so doing, we are trying to curb crime. We have involved talent scouts so they can discover skilled players at the tournament,” said Makhura.
