Honoured Ekurhuleni Golf Union visitors had a breathtaking day of golf on the underdeveloped Ebuhleni Golf course on Saturday, July 14.
Benoni Country Club’s CEO Darren Millington said it was awesome to experience a round of golf at Ebuhleni with the local community.
“Tembisa Golf Club’s organising secretary, Benjamin ‘Benjy’ Monyanyedi, has put on a fantastic event through Ekurhuleni Golf Union.
“Hopefully there will be more of these to come. It is nice to see that there are so many young stars out here from a developmental perspective, practising their golf and joining this wonderful game,” said Millington.

Millington said he thinks it will be beneficial to get Ekurhuleni Golf Union and the Ekurhuleni council to be more involved in the Ebuhleni golf facility so that it can grow.
“There’s so much talent around here which can definitely grow in the game of golf.
“And yes, I foresee much more of these type of events happening all the time,” said Millington.
Eastern Nomads’ junior vice-captain, Stephen Malherbe, said their goal as Nomads is to give to those who are less fortunate.
“I didn’t know what to expect when we arrived here but it was a great experience, a five-hole course that we played a few times. The guys here don’t have what we have at our golf courses and, in the end, we should be appreciative of what we’ve got.

“Hopefully, this should happen on a more regular basis and we should get the guys from Ekurhuleni golf to form that relationship and also develop the children because that is where the future lies.
“We should strengthen that relationship,” said Malherbe.
Monyanyedi said it was indeed more than just golf this time around.
“We had a memorable closing ceremony that was marked with the singing of the SA national anthem Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika.
“A slight drizzle that threatened to dampen the day earlier suddenly behaved and gave way to a great golfing event undoubtedly the best that would have been hosted so far at Tembisa’s Ebuhleni Golf Club,” said Monyanyedi.

He said the guests from Ekurhuleni Golf Union found their way into the Kasi as early as 7.30am in the morning.
“Somdaka Funerals had already prepared the tent and breakfast was ready to be served.”
The first four-ball teed off at about 8am, much to the applauding of a crowd that gathered around the first hole.
“Local lads in the likes of George Mokela, Sam Bhiya, Tenashe Nyika, Andries Maenetja, amongst others, were raving with excitement ready to take on the outsiders at a golf course they truly regard as home,” explained Monyanyedi.
The visitors thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“Yes, true to their promise, the Ekurhuleni Golf Union executives came, played 18 holes of golf and joined in the festivities of the day.”
Among the guests were great golfers of yesteryear, including Johnny Maubane and Sello Mashego.
The sponsor of the day were Coca-Cola, Somdaka Funerals and Standard Bank.
“SA Breweries ensured our guests, our visitors and everyone who was at Ebuhleni, after the children had left, enjoyed themselves and that really marked a great day with great moments of camaraderie,” Monyanyedi said.
Tembisa Golf Club also thanked everyone who assisted with the event especially Frans Molepo, Jonathan Maubane, Reuben Motsomotso and Jack Khunou who prepared the breakfast, lunch and the braai and served everyone.
“The golf union will now be able to understand the challenges facing Ebuhleni and map out a solution and we are confident they will share their experience at the union level. Nevertheless, it was humbling to have them at Ebuhleni.
“Only good can come from this,” said Monyanyedi.
