GSS conquers Powerico Winter Games, take home R110 000

The Powerico Winter Games reached its final stage at Mehlareng Stadium on July 28.
GSS emerged victorious in the much anticipated final match of the tournament and took home R110 000.
GSS coach Jabulani Chauke said preparation for the tournament was a challenge as GSS began with less than 15 players.
“It was a challenge because we had to play strong teams. In our first game, we played Soweto Super United. It was a big game which, for me, determined our win in the finals.
“In the second game, we played Mapela and we won on penalties. The third game we played Milano where we won 3-1. The goals were scored by Patrick Ocheme, Willy Makhubela and Talent Mohlale,” said Jabulani.
In the final game, GSS was tipped against The Rock where GSS had to prove itself as the champions of the game.
“We have played The Rock before and they beat us. Today was the day where we had to make history by beating them in the final of the Powerico Winter Games. We had confidence and the opponents were sure that they were going to beat us.
“I told my boys that when we lose the game we don’t have pressure. No one was going to blame them that they did not do their job. I told them to go onto the pitch to do what they are good at and we will win the game,” Jabulani.
He said the first half was tough but GSS was able to break The Rock’s defence. Jabulani said they were not lucky to convert chances into goals.
At the end of the first half the score was 0-0 and in the second half, Jabulani substituted Reason Maswanganye for Livingstone Hlongwane so that he can give them strength going forward.
“That is how we managed to score our first goal, through a penalty which was scored by Lenox Baloyi. The opponents started attacking and putting us under pressure but we managed to contain it.
“Ten minutes before the final whistle we managed to get a second goal made by Tshepa ‘Xavi’ Ntsholu. It was over for The Rock because we won 2-0,” said Jabulani.
He commended the organisers of Powerico Winter Games for the job well done.
“Everything was on point, everything was good. Commentators, referees and management of the tournament were all good.”
He congratulated the organisers for regular updates made through social networks during the tournament.
He also advised the organisers to improve on doing immediate updates after every 10 minutes while the game is still on to accommodate people who are unable to attend the games.
