Lamb proves a huge drawcard for Tembisa golfers

Mporo Mathiyase of Umthambeka Section said he played well on the day but could not be good enough to stop the youngster from Ivory Park.

The highly-rated Lamb Golf competition produced one of the greatest upsets of the season.

Themba Dube of the Harry Mthembu Tembisa Golf Development stable fired 40 points to convincingly hammer the field.

He delivered 14 points which were added to his handicap of 16 thereby clobbering all and sundry in a field that attracted the cream of the crop of golfers in Tembisa and the surrounding Ekurhuleni areas.

Mthembu was all glee as he watched his protégé lift the full-size lamb as a reward for coming out first. In fact, the lad had to be assisted to lift the full-size lamb, almost bigger in size than him.

Mporo Mathiyase of Umthambeka Section said he played well on the day but could not be good enough to stop the youngster from Ivory Park.

Many of the golfers who took part in this winner-take-the-Lamb competition had high hopes. They included the likes of Mayo Dimo who finally made it to the final after some sterling display of golf always been expected of him.

Benjamin Monyanyedi, organising secretary of the Tembisa Golf Club, was joined by Sifiso Motsa, Veli Mulaudzi and Sam Serongoane, show off the lamb awarded to the winner Themba Dube.

Ebuhleni was well represented this time around with the likes of Sam Bhiya , George Mokela , Joko Makhoba, Fanie Marais and Sipho Sidu, making a great attempt to win the full lamb, but coming short.

Aubrey Molefe, Colin Sibeko, Thabang Simon Jr (10-year – old), were on target as they also collected meat prize packages which were on offer on the day after also playing some great golf.

This event was sponsored by Sifiso Motsa, a member of the Tembisa Golf Club. It promises to be a regular annual event due to the popularity it enjoyed, attracting no less than 56 golfers. It was a truly well-organised event. The format of play was one that had not been experienced for a long time at the club.

Kempton Park Country Club is targeted to be the main venue for this event as Tembisa Golf Club was able to raise enough funds that will come handy for the club’s development programme.

Tembisa is planning its next big annual golf event, the Ebuhleni Golf Open Championship, previously won by Temong Section-based Whitey Thokoane last year.

The inaugural Ebuhleni Open was such a huge success. However, after speaking to the Lamb Golf sponsor Sifiso Motsa last Sunday of August 19, he seemed to be willing to assist to elevate the open to even greater heights.

Sifiso is also fast proving to be one of the favourite sons of the soil in Tembisa, joining the likes of Billy Selekane and others to help to unearth golfing talent in the township.
