Norkem Primary teacher to referee at Safa and Varsity Cup

Hanson’s biggest goal is to be Fifa aligned and travel to the World Cup and referee at a World Cup final.

A local teacher from Norkem Park Primary School has been selected to join the South African Football Association (Safa) second division and the Varsity Cup as a referee.

Brett Hanson’s journey started when he was in Grade 11 and was required to do job shadowing as a school project. He did his job shadowing at Norkem Primary and he was later offered a position as a teacher after he matriculated in 2013.

He is also a soccer coach at the school. The first team soccer boys, coached by Hanson, have recently been invited to go to Uganda for an international soccer tournament. He is also currently coaching cricket at the school.

He started as a referee at the Local Football Association (LFA), then proceeded to be a regional referee for Ekurhuleni and was promoted to the ABC Motsepe League, which is the provincial league. He went on to be in the Safa second division league last year, and now he will be a referee for the Multi Diski challenge.

This year Hanson has been appointed to the Varsity Cup panel of referees.

One of the 25-year-old’s biggest achievements is when he was chosen to referee at an international final between a team from Belgium and the Netherlands for the Future Champions Tournament that is held in Soweto annually.

Hanson’s biggest goal is to be Fifa aligned and travel to the World Cup and referee at a World Cup final.
