Aston Manor Down Syndrome (11) athlete makes Gauteng team

Logan Ferreira joined the Down Syndrome SA association and he is becoming an athletics star.

Logan Ferreira might be living with Down Syndrome but that does not stop him from being a winner.

This 11-year-old Edenica Private School learner has been an active child since a very young age, loving to take part in athletics. He won his first medal at the age of six competing at school.

The Allen Grove boy was selected for the Gauteng athletics team under Down Syndrome South Africa and will take part in the SA Age Group Games 2018 at Kings Park Athletics Stadium in Durban on September 24 and 25. Logan will compete in 100m, 200m and long jump.

Mom Adele Bredenkamp said: “Logan had talent from a young age and we pursued it. Last year we joined Down Syndrome South Africa and he formed part of the athletics team. His favourite event to take part in is the long jump.”

Logan and his parents, Adele and Jaco Bredenkamp, are looking forward to his competition in Durban.

He entered local athletics competitions held by Down Syndrome SA and had been achieving since. He is coached at school during athletics practice and also attends sessions at the Down Syndrome SA fields in Pretoria.

At the last event where he was chosen to represent Gauteng, he came third in the 100m, second in the 200m and first in long jump. Although he is only 11 years old, Logan’s talent saw him compete with u-13 athletes.

“The whole family is excited and proud of him. He has our full support and we will be going to Durban with him,” said Bredenkamp.

“We are crossing our fingers he gets first or second place in his respective fields so he can get his SA colours too. That would be a very big achievement for him and for us,” she added.
