Team Gael South African returned home with double gold after both teams outshined their counterparts at the recent 2018 FEXCO Asian Gaelic Games.
Travelling to Bangkok, Thailand, the plan was to be competitive enough that South Africa could be proud to be represented but when winning came their way, the goalpost was shifted and trophies became the goal.
“As a coach I was really humbled by the spirit, talent and unity the players displayed. Regardless of our challenge, we remained solid to our main objective of showcasing African strength and talent for the development and upgrading of the team in future,” said Greg Harety.
Both teams made South Africa proud by clinching the first position after winning all their games. Most of the players are based in Tembisa.
“I am really proud of the players that stepped in to represent the continent and country well during the tour. It was an honour to really see talent and eagerness to improve in both teams,” said Niall Morris, treasurer and Chef de Mission.
The performances of Lebohang Maekela, Charles Radingona and Denmark Baloyi were honoured by being part of the All Star team. The pride of the captains were boosted by the performance of the teams and returning home with trophies and three All Star players.

“We had anticipated hot weather but we didn’t realise the impact of the humidity, which we battled to cope with the first night. When the machine started working, we worked well and were honoured to have a woman and two gentlemen as All Star players,” said men’s captain Thabiso Phakedi.
“There is nothing more overwhelming than to return home as double champions even though we were the smallest in number during the tournament, but big at heart,” said women’s captain Mavis Mkhize.
The captains believe South Africa is capable of winning at the world championships next year, but only if there could be enough support to ensure that players are well equipped.
The players and management need assistance of any kind of sponsorship to ease their world championship preparations.
“At times we lose games because we have to adjust to the weather, especially when in Europe, but if we could have a sponsor that could assist us to travel at least three days before the tournament start, I believe we could bring better results,” emphasised Mkhize.
According to the general secretary, Derrick McCarthy, there is enough talent in South Africa to be acknowledged for funding.
“We would appreciate any kind of support so that Africa and South Africa could be well represented with a well-prepared team. The team struggles mostly with venue training sessions as most players are around Tembisa,” he said.
