Tembisa’s Sugar Mabaso reaches for the PSL
Mduduzi 'Sugar' Mabaso aims to impress PSL teams.
In the previous edition, we wrote about twin brothers building Tembisa soccer stars.
This week we talked to Mduduzi ‘Sugar’ Mabaso who was given a chance by Thabo and Mpho Kobola to shine at the Philly’s Games 2018.
The 18-year-old soccer star said he views himself as an asset to the game of soccer and he hopes to find a team in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) soon.
He said his love for the game began when he started playing soccer at the age of eight while at Phomolong Primary School.
He continued playing soccer at Charlotte Maxeke Secondary School.
“My two older brothers also played soccer and that is how I got inspired to join the sport.
“I am a future PSL star; many people see my potential.
“Mpho Kele introduced me to Dribbling Wizards FC when I was only nine years old. I played for them until I was 16 years old,” Sugar explained.
He said he then moved to Shumba Football Development in the SAB League Ekurhuleni, where he still is today.
Sugar’s talent was spotted by Umlilo FC and he was invited to play for them at the Philly’s Games 2018.
“This was my first time playing in the tournament for a senior team.
“I was not scared, but I was very confident because I was used to playing with other senior teams.
“Playing in the Philly’s Games I experienced the pressure of playing in front of a huge crowd.
“What I learnt is to get rid of fear,” said Sugar.
He said he will be playing again in the Philly’s Games 2019 and he hopes to get to the finals.
Sugar added impressing teams in the PSL will take a lot of hard work and patience.
“My family supports me fully and I want to thank them because during hard times they are always there for me.
“I believe sport can help in building the youth by keeping them away from drugs and crime.
“Parents must give their full support to their children and encourage them to take part in sport.
“They must also watch their children when they are playing in their matches,” said Sugar.
